Shanna Moakler began her career as a pageant contestant. She represented Rhode Island in the Miss Teen USA pageant in 1992 and made it to the semifinals before coming in seventh overall. In 1995 she was named Miss New York USA and went on to compete in the Miss USA pageant. She came in second but the winner was forced resign to become Miss Universe so Shanna was eventually crowned the winner. She chafed at the restrictions of being the pageant winner, such as having to live with a chaperone for a full year. The chaperone's job was to ensure the young blonde behaved properly, including a dress code.

Shanna Moakler used her fame as Miss USA to launch a television career. Most girls in that position are unable to do much with it but she defied the odds. She made appearances on such shows as "Lois & Clark", "Due South" and an NBC TV movie "Friends Til the End".
