Somes films credited her as Vanessa Steiger. This girl started her acting career in 1980 playing a supporting role in the comedy La Compagna di viaggio by Ferdinando Baldi. Very soon, she became popular in her home country because of her sex appeal.

In 1980, Grandi played the role of Maggie in the controversial film "The Anthropophagous Beast", directed by Joe D'Amato. This film is well known among horror movie fans for its extreme gore sequence. After few films, Serena took a starring role in Tinto Brass's "Miranda". This role catapulted her into celebrity. In this movie, Grandi played the main character, who is looking for a husband, trying different sexual experiences among the men of her village. While she had played in other erotic softcore films, Miranda was the one that put her on the map.
